Anthropology admission requirements at the University of Ibadan

Anthropology at the University of Ibadan

Students planning to study Anthropology at the University of Ibadan should prepare according to their admission route. UTME candidates need to check their JAMB subjects and O'Level result, while Direct Entry applicants need to meet the A' Level requirement.

UTME Subjects

English Language is compulsory. Candidates should then choose any three from:

  • History
  • CRS/IRS
  • Geography
  • Economics
  • Literature in English
  • French

CRS/IRS means Christian Religious Studies or Islamic Religious Studies, so the candidate chooses one of the two.

O'Level Requirements

Candidates need five SSCE credit passes, including:

  • English Language
  • Government or History
  • Religious Studies
  • Geography
  • Economics

Government and History are alternatives. Religious Studies, Geography and Economics are separately required.

Direct Entry Requirement

Direct Entry candidates need any two A' Level passes in Arts subjects.

Special Considerations at the University of Ibadan

The University of Ibadan has additional admission conditions that Anthropology candidates should consider separately from the general course requirements.

UTME Special Consideration

For UTME candidates, the University of Ibadan requires O'Level credit passes in English Language and any other three Arts subjects.

This requirement should be considered when checking the SSCE result for an application to Anthropology at the university.

Direct Entry Special Consideration

For Direct Entry candidates, the University of Ibadan accepts A' Level passes in:

  • Geography
  • Economics
  • Government
  • Sociology

How the Requirements Fit Together

For a UTME applicant, the first step is to make sure the JAMB combination is correct. English Language is compulsory, followed by any three of the approved course-related subjects.

The candidate should then check the SSCE result. Five credit passes are required, including English Language, Government or History, Religious Studies, Geography and Economics.

For a Direct Entry applicant, the focus shifts to the A' Level qualification. Two A' Level passes in Arts subjects are required, with the University of Ibadan accepting Geography, Economics, Government and Sociology.

Admission Requirements at a Glance

Admission Area Requirement
UTME English Language plus any three of History, CRS/IRS, Geography, Economics, Literature in English and French.
O'Level Five SSCE credit passes including English Language, Government or History, Religious Studies, Geography and Economics.
UI UTME Special Consideration O'Level credit passes in English Language and any other three Arts subjects.
Direct Entry Any two A' Level passes in Arts subjects.
UI DE Special Consideration A' Level passes in Geography, Economics, Government and Sociology.

Important Point About the Subject Requirements

The alternatives should be read exactly as written. Government or History means that either Government or History can satisfy that part of the O'Level requirement. Religious Studies, Geography and Economics are not alternatives and should not be grouped together as though only one is needed.

Before Applying to Study Anthropology

UTME candidates should check their four JAMB subjects and the subjects and grades on their SSCE result. Direct Entry candidates should check their A' Level qualification and the subjects accepted by the University of Ibadan.

Taking these checks seriously can help candidates identify qualification issues before completing the admission process.

Final Thoughts

Anthropology at the University of Ibadan has separate requirements for UTME and Direct Entry candidates, together with university-specific special considerations. Candidates should match their qualifications carefully with the route they intend to use and pay close attention to the individual subjects required.
