Students studying Banking/Finance in a Nigerian university

What Is Banking/Finance?

Banking/Finance is a degree programme for students who are interested in how money is managed, how financial institutions operate and how individuals, businesses and organisations make financial decisions. The course brings together ideas from banking, economics, accounting, investment and business management, giving students an understanding of how the financial side of an organisation works.

A student of Banking/Finance may learn about the activities carried out by commercial banks and other financial institutions, while also developing an understanding of financial planning, credit, savings, investment and financial decision-making. The programme is therefore not limited to working inside a bank. Its knowledge can be useful in several areas of the financial and business sector.

What Does the Programme Cover?

The exact courses offered by each university can differ, but Banking/Finance generally exposes students to areas connected with banking operations, financial management, economics, accounting, investment, credit administration and business decision-making. Students also develop quantitative and analytical skills that can help them understand financial information and make informed decisions.

Who May Enjoy Studying Banking/Finance?

The course can suit students who are comfortable with numbers, interested in business and curious about how financial institutions and markets work. It also requires attention to detail because financial decisions often depend on accurate information and careful analysis.

Where Can the Degree Lead?

Graduates can explore opportunities in banking, finance, investment, insurance, financial consulting, credit management, accounting-related roles and other business areas. The particular career path will depend on the graduate's skills, experience, professional qualifications and the type of organisation they choose to work with.

For admission purposes, the current requirements for the programme include five SSC credit passes including English Language and Mathematics, while the listed UTME subjects are Mathematics, Economics and any one of Government and Geography. Use of English should also be included as the compulsory UTME subject.
