What Is Christian Studies?

Christian Studies is an academic discipline that examines Christianity, its beliefs, teachings, history, texts, traditions and relationship with human society. Although the subject is closely connected with religion, university-level Christian Studies involves more than learning or memorising religious teachings.

Students are encouraged to examine Christianity through reading, research, interpretation and critical thinking. The programme can therefore provide an opportunity to understand Christian thought while also considering the historical and social environments in which Christianity has developed.

Major Areas Students May Encounter

Christian Teachings and Beliefs

Students study important Christian ideas and teachings and develop an understanding of the beliefs that have influenced Christian communities. This provides a foundation for examining Christianity as both a religious tradition and an area of academic study.

Biblical and Religious Texts

Christian Studies involves engagement with important Christian texts. Students can learn to examine texts carefully, consider their themes and understand how interpretation contributes to the study of Christianity.

History of Christianity

The history of Christianity helps students understand how the religion developed across different periods. Historical study can reveal how Christian communities, institutions and ideas have changed over time.

Christian Ethics

Questions of morality and human conduct are also relevant to Christian Studies. Students can examine Christian approaches to issues of responsibility, relationships, justice and acceptable behaviour.

Christianity and Culture

Christianity exists within different cultural environments. Students can therefore explore how Christian beliefs and practices interact with culture, traditions, communities and changing social circumstances.

Religion and Society

The programme can also examine the place of Christianity within society. This may involve considering religion's relationship with education, family life, social values, institutions and community development.

How Students Study the Course

University study requires students to go beyond simply remembering information. They may be expected to read academic materials, conduct research, interpret texts, write essays and present arguments.

These activities help students develop the ability to examine a subject from different perspectives and support their conclusions with relevant evidence.

Who Might Enjoy Christian Studies?

  • Students interested in Christianity and religion.
  • Learners who enjoy history and culture.
  • Students who like reading and interpreting texts.
  • Those interested in moral and social questions.
  • Students who enjoy research and academic writing.
  • Learners interested in the relationship between religion and society.

Skills That Can Come From the Programme

Christian Studies can help students strengthen their research, writing, communication, interpretation and critical-thinking abilities. These are transferable skills that can remain useful even when a graduate eventually chooses a career outside the religious sector.

Christian Studies and the JAMB Arts/Humanities Listing

Christian Studies is listed as a distinct course under the Arts/Humanities section of the JAMB brochure. It should therefore be treated separately from Christian Religious Knowledge/Studies when candidates are checking admission information. The brochure lists Ajayi Crowther University, the University of Ilorin and Kwara State University as the institutions offering Christian Studies.

Is It the Same as Christian Religious Knowledge/Studies?

The names are similar, but the JAMB brochure presents them as separate course listings. A candidate should therefore check the exact course name selected during registration and use the admission requirements attached to that particular programme.

A Course Built Around People, Ideas and Belief

Christian Studies gives students an opportunity to examine Christianity from academic, historical, textual and social perspectives. It can suit learners who are interested in religion and who also enjoy reading, research and understanding how ideas influence people and communities.

For a fuller admission picture, candidates can check the document below and compare the course listing with the requirements attached to their preferred institution.
