O'Level Requirements for Classical Studies
JAMB subject selection is only one part of preparing for admission into Classical Studies. Candidates must also ensure that their O'Level result contains the required number of credits and the subjects specified for the programme.
How Many Credits Are Required?
The JAMB brochure states that candidates need either five SSC credit passes at one sitting or six SSC credit passes at two sittings.
Subjects That Must Be Included
The required credits must include:
- English Language
- Literature in English or History
- One Arts or Social Science subject
- Any other subject
These conditions form the O'Level requirement stated under Classical Studies. :contentReference[oaicite:5]{index=5}
English Language
English Language is specifically required among the five or six qualifying credits. Candidates should therefore confirm the required credit on their SSCE result.
Literature in English or History
A credit in Literature in English or History is also required. Candidates should check which of these subjects appears on their result and ensure that the applicable condition is satisfied.
Arts or Social Science Subject
At least one Arts or Social Science subject must also be included. This makes it important to examine the individual subjects on the result rather than simply counting the number of credits.
One Sitting or Two Sittings
The requirement allows five credits at one sitting or six credits at two sittings. Candidates using two results should make sure the combined results provide the required credits and subjects.
Why the Subject Combination Matters
A candidate can have enough total credits and still have an issue if the required subjects are missing. This is why checking the result subject by subject is more useful than simply counting the number of credit passes.
O'Level Checklist
- English Language credit
- Literature in English or History credit
- At least one Arts or Social Science credit
- Another qualifying subject
- Five credits at one sitting or six at two sittings
Do Not Use Another Course's Requirement
Classical Studies has its own O'Level requirement in the JAMB brochure. Candidates should therefore avoid automatically applying the requirements of History, Literature or another related Arts programme.
Those reviewing their eligibility can refer to the document below for the original course entry and use it alongside their O'Level result when making the final check.
