Economics and Accountancy/Accounting: What Is the Difference?
Contents
Two Related but Different Fields
Economics and Accountancy/Accounting are both connected to business and financial activity, but they do not study the same things.
What Economics Concentrates On
Economics examines markets, resources, economic decisions, policies and the behaviour of individuals, firms and governments. It looks at the wider forces that influence an economy.
What Accountancy/Accounting Concentrates On
Accountancy/Accounting is more focused on financial transactions, accounting records, financial reporting, analysis and the proper presentation of financial information.
Different Ways of Thinking
An Economics student may spend considerable time analysing economic relationships, markets and policies, while an Accountancy/Accounting student is more directly concerned with financial records and accounting procedures.
Career Direction
Economics can lead towards economic research, banking, policy, business analysis and development work. Accountancy/Accounting can lead towards accounting and financial reporting roles and professional accounting qualifications.
If you enjoy understanding how economies and markets work, Economics may be the better fit. If you prefer financial records and accounting practice, Accountancy/Accounting may suit you more.
