Economics O'Level subjects required for Art/Humanities admission

For candidates seeking admission to study Economics, the JAMB brochure gives a specific five-credit O'Level structure for the course. The requirement is based on five credits, with particular subjects named as part of the combination.

O'Level Subjects Required for Economics

The brochure requires five (5) SSC credit passes to include:

  • English Language
  • Mathematics
  • Economics
  • At least two other relevant subjects from Commerce, Government and Accounting

The structure is stated directly in the Economics entry, with English Language, Mathematics and Economics identified before the additional relevant subjects.

Breaking Down the Five Credits

Three subjects are clearly named: English Language, Mathematics and Economics. The remaining two credits are to come from the relevant subjects identified as Commerce, Government and Accounting.

Therefore, candidates should not treat all three of Commerce, Government and Accounting as compulsory. The wording provides them as the subjects from which the additional relevant credits are obtained.

Why Mathematics Matters

Mathematics is specifically included in the O'Level requirement. This is separate from the UTME subject combination, where Mathematics is also named. Candidates should therefore pay attention to Mathematics at both stages of the admission requirements.

Do Not Confuse O'Level Subjects With UTME Subjects

The O'Level requirement and UTME combination are not identical. For UTME, the brochure gives Economics, Mathematics and one of a number of alternatives including Government, History, Geography, Literature in English, French and CRS/IRS.

For O'Level, however, the five-credit structure specifically includes English Language, Mathematics and Economics, together with at least two relevant subjects from Commerce, Government and Accounting.

Institutional Considerations

The exact Economics entry presents this five-credit structure for the institutions listed under the course. Candidates should still check the complete admission entry before applying, particularly if the institution publishes additional conditions elsewhere in its admission process.
