Actuarial Science and Mathematics: How Are They Different?
Contents
Actuarial Science vs Mathematics
Actuarial Science and Mathematics are strongly connected, but they are not the same course. Mathematics is a broad discipline that explores numbers, structures, patterns, quantities and mathematical reasoning. Actuarial Science takes many quantitative ideas and applies them to financial risk and uncertainty.
The Main Difference
A Mathematics student may study mathematics from theoretical and applied perspectives across many areas. An Actuarial Science student is more focused on using quantitative methods to answer practical questions involving risk, money, insurance, investments and future financial outcomes.
Which One Is More Financial?
Actuarial Science has a much stronger connection with finance, insurance, economics and risk management. Mathematics can also be applied in finance, but finance and risk are not the defining focus of the entire Mathematics degree.
Who May Prefer Actuarial Science?
Students who enjoy Mathematics but also have a strong interest in finance, business, statistics and risk may find Actuarial Science particularly suitable. Those who prefer a broader mathematical education may be more interested in Mathematics.
