African and Asian Studies O'Level Subjects Required for UTME Candidates
Contents
African and Asian Studies O'Level Requirements
Having the correct JAMB subject combination is only one part of preparing for admission into African and Asian Studies. UTME candidates also need to check their O'Level results and make sure the required subjects and credit passes are available.
How Many Credits Are Required?
Candidates need five O'Level credit passes for African and Asian Studies.
The five credits should satisfy the required subject areas rather than simply being five unrelated credits.
English Language
English Language is required among the O'Level subjects. Candidates should therefore check their SSCE result and confirm the required credit in English Language.
Language Requirement
The O'Level requirement also includes a credit pass in an African, Asian, Nigerian or foreign language, where applicable.
This requirement is particularly relevant to the nature of the course because African and Asian Studies deals with different peoples, languages and cultural environments.
Other Required Subjects
The remaining subjects can come from relevant Arts, Social Sciences or Sciences subject areas. Examples include subjects such as Government, History, Literature in English, Economics and other relevant subjects.
Simple Breakdown
A candidate can think of the requirement in three parts:
- Five O'Level credit passes in total.
- English Language must be included.
- An appropriate African, Asian, Nigerian or foreign language should be included, with other relevant subjects completing the five credits.
Accepted O'Level Examinations
The relevant secondary school qualifications may include recognised examinations such as WAEC, NECO and GCE. Candidates should ensure that the result they are presenting satisfies the required subjects and credit conditions.
Why Candidates Should Check Individual Subjects
A candidate may have five or more credits and still need to examine the individual subjects carefully. Admission requirements are based not only on the number of credits but also on the subjects included in the result.
UTME and O'Level Requirements Are Different
The JAMB combination concerns the subjects candidates take in UTME. The O'Level requirement concerns the credits obtained in their secondary school examination.
For African and Asian Studies, candidates should therefore check the JAMB combination separately from their SSCE result.
Final Advice
Before applying for African and Asian Studies, UTME candidates should carefully examine their O'Level result. The key requirement is five credit passes, including English Language and an appropriate African, Asian, Nigerian or foreign language, with other relevant subjects completing the required credits.
