JAMB Combination for Arabic Language and Literature

Choosing the right UTME subjects is an important part of preparing to study Arabic Language and Literature. Candidates should select subjects that satisfy the combination required for the programme.

The UTME Subjects

  • English Language
  • Arabic
  • Any two subjects from Arts and/or Social Sciences

English Language

English Language is compulsory in the UTME combination. Candidates should therefore include it when registering for JAMB.

Arabic

Arabic is a key subject for the programme because the degree focuses on the Arabic language and its literature. Candidates should include Arabic in their UTME subjects.

The Other Two Subjects

The remaining two subjects should come from Arts and/or Social Sciences. Candidates have room to choose appropriate subjects within these subject areas.

The important point is that the combination must contain Arabic and two additional subjects from the permitted Arts or Social Sciences group alongside English Language.

A Simple Way to Arrange the Combination

  1. English Language
  2. Arabic
  3. One Arts or Social Science subject
  4. One other Arts or Social Science subject

Examples of Suitable Areas

Depending on the subjects available to the candidate, the two additional choices can be selected from relevant Arts or Social Science subjects. Candidates should ensure that the subjects they choose fall within the required categories rather than selecting subjects simply because they are personally preferred.

Why the Combination Matters

A candidate can have a strong UTME score and still encounter an admission problem if the selected subjects do not satisfy the requirements for the intended course. This is why the subject combination should be checked before JAMB registration is completed.

Do Not Mix This Up With O'Level Requirements

UTME subjects and O'Level subjects serve different purposes. The UTME combination refers to the subjects taken during JAMB, while the O'Level requirement concerns the credit passes contained in the candidate's secondary school result.

Candidates should therefore check both separately.

Before Submitting Your JAMB Registration

  • English Language is included.
  • Arabic is included.
  • The remaining two subjects are from Arts and/or Social Sciences.
  • The combination corresponds with Arabic Language and Literature.

Checking these details early gives candidates an opportunity to correct a subject-selection problem before it affects the admission process.

For additional admission information, candidates should also examine the wider requirements provided below, especially the O'Level and Direct Entry conditions.
