O'Level Requirements for Arabic Language and Literature
UTME candidates need to check their SSCE result carefully before applying for Arabic Language and Literature. Having the correct JAMB combination does not replace the need to satisfy the required O'Level subjects.
Five Credit Passes Are Required
The general requirement is five SSCE credit passes in the required subjects.
The credits should not be treated as five unrelated passes. Candidates need to ensure that the subjects on their result satisfy the required subject areas for the programme.
English Language
English Language is required among the O'Level subjects. Candidates should therefore confirm that they have the required credit pass in English Language.
Arabic
Arabic is also required. This is particularly relevant to a degree centred on Arabic language and literature, so candidates should check their SSCE result carefully for the required Arabic credit.
Three Other Relevant Subjects
The remaining three credits should be in relevant subjects. These can include appropriate Arts or related subjects that satisfy the admission requirement.
The key structure is therefore:
- English Language.
- Arabic.
- Three other relevant subjects.
What Candidates Should Check on Their Results
Do not look only at the total number of credits. Check the individual subjects because a result may contain five or more credits while still lacking a subject specifically required for the course.
English Language and Arabic should receive particular attention when reviewing the result.
UTME and O'Level Requirements Are Not the Same
The JAMB combination determines the subjects a candidate takes in UTME. The O'Level requirement concerns the subjects in which the candidate has obtained the necessary credit passes.
A candidate should therefore satisfy both requirements independently.
Before Applying
- Confirm your English Language credit.
- Confirm your Arabic credit.
- Count the remaining relevant credits.
- Ensure the total reaches five required credits.
- Check that the result satisfies the university being considered.
Using More Than One O'Level Result
Where a candidate intends to combine results, the acceptability of the combination should be checked against the conditions of the university being considered. Candidates should not assume that every institution handles combined results in exactly the same way.
Check the Details Before Application
A careful review of the SSCE result can prevent avoidable admission problems. Candidates should compare their actual subjects and grades with the requirements before completing their application.
