Archaeology Direct Entry Requirements
Direct Entry provides an admission route for candidates who already hold qualifications beyond the ordinary secondary school level. Candidates interested in studying Archaeology through Direct Entry need to understand the qualification required and the specific conditions attached to their preferred university.
General Direct Entry Requirement for Archaeology
The general Direct Entry requirement for Archaeology is two A' Level passes in Arts or Social Sciences and one Science subject.
In addition to this general requirement, individual universities have specific Direct Entry conditions. Candidates should therefore check the condition that applies to the university they intend to attend.
Direct Entry at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU)
ABU accepts two A' Level or IJMB passes in Geography, Biology, History or any other subject.
ABU also accepts NCE with a minimum of Merit.
An ABU Diploma in related subjects is also accepted.
Direct Entry at the University of Ibadan
The University of Ibadan accepts A' Level passes in any two Arts subjects for Archaeology.
Direct Entry at the University of Jos
The University of Jos accepts NCE Merit or ND Lower Credit for Archaeology.
Direct Entry at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka
The University of Nigeria, Nsukka requires two A' Level passes or ND/HND Credit or NCE Merit together with the applicable UTME requirements.
A' Level Qualifications
A' Level qualifications are part of the Direct Entry route for Archaeology. The specific subjects and conditions vary between institutions.
ABU accepts two A' Level or IJMB passes in Geography, Biology, History or any other subject, while the University of Ibadan accepts A' Level passes in any two Arts subjects.
IJMB Qualification
IJMB is specifically accepted by ABU. The university accepts two A' Level or IJMB passes in Geography, Biology, History or any other subject.
NCE Qualification
NCE is accepted under the Direct Entry conditions of ABU, the University of Jos and UNN, with the required level stated by each institution.
ABU requires a minimum of Merit, JOS accepts NCE Merit and UNN accepts NCE Merit.
ND and HND Qualifications
ND and HND qualifications are included in the Direct Entry conditions of some of the universities. JOS accepts ND Lower Credit, while UNN accepts ND/HND Credit.
ABU Diploma
ABU accepts an ABU Diploma in related subjects for Direct Entry into Archaeology.
Why the Direct Entry Requirement Depends on the University
The Direct Entry conditions are not identical across all the universities offering Archaeology. A candidate should therefore compare their qualification with the requirement of their preferred university rather than assuming that one institution's condition applies to another.
For example, ABU has specific conditions for IJMB, NCE and its related diploma, while JOS specifies NCE Merit or ND Lower Credit. UNN also has its own combination of acceptable qualifications.
Direct Entry for Combined Programmes
Candidates combining Archaeology with Science or Social Sciences must satisfy the requirements applicable to the respective programmes.
This means that a candidate seeking admission into a combined programme must consider the Direct Entry requirements of the respective programme as well as the applicable Archaeology condition.
Final Advice for Direct Entry Candidates
Before applying through Direct Entry, identify the university you want to attend and the qualification you intend to use. Compare that qualification with the specific Direct Entry condition of the institution.
This is important because the accepted qualifications and required grades differ between universities.
