Human Resources Management or Business Administration, Which is Better?
Contents
Human Resources Management and Business Administration are closely related management courses, but they do not have exactly the same focus. Both can introduce students to how organisations operate, although Human Resources Management places more attention on the people within the organisation.
Human Resources Management
Human Resources Management focuses specifically on employees and the systems used to manage them. Recruitment, selection, training, performance management, employee relations, compensation and personnel administration are examples of areas associated with the field.
Business Administration
Business Administration is broader in scope. Depending on the university, students may encounter areas such as management, marketing, finance, operations, entrepreneurship and other business functions.
Where the two courses meet
Both courses can cover management principles, organisational behaviour, communication and decision-making. A Business Administration student may therefore encounter some HR-related topics, while a Human Resources Management student also learns management concepts.
What should a prospective student compare?
Instead of judging the two courses only by their names, compare the actual curriculum of the universities you are considering. Look at the subjects offered, practical training, admission requirements and the areas of work connected with each programme.
The choice ultimately depends on the type of academic content and career direction that interests you.
