Human Resources Management and Industrial Relations: What Is the Difference?
Human Resources Management and Industrial Relations are closely related, which can make the two courses appear almost identical. However, they can approach workplace issues from different perspectives.
Human Resources Management
Human Resources Management has a broad focus on managing people within an organisation. It can cover recruitment, selection, training, employee development, performance management, compensation, personnel administration and employee engagement.
Industrial Relations
Industrial Relations is more closely associated with relationships between employees, employers and organised labour. It can involve workplace relations, employment issues and matters that arise between different parties in the employment relationship.
Where they overlap
There is considerable overlap between the two areas. Both can involve employee relations, workplace communication, employment policies and organisational matters.
The exact difference can also depend on how a university structures its programme. Students should therefore compare the actual course content and programme structure of the institutions they are considering.
