Philosophy Direct Entry requirements for Art/Humanities candidates

The general Direct Entry requirement shown for Philosophy is any two A' Level passes. Several institutions, however, have additional or different Direct Entry conditions.

General Direct Entry Position

The Philosophy entry gives Any two (2) A' Level passes as the general Direct Entry requirement.

Institution-Specific Direct Entry Conditions

  • AAU: accepts three A' Level passes; the entry also states additional relevant-subject/O'Level conditions in its special consideration.
  • AAUA: accepts two A' Level subjects or ND in Law, Religious Studies or Philosophy from approved institutions or NCE Merit.
  • AUGUSTINE: accepts NCE Merit/ND Credit in relevant subjects/programmes in addition to the stated O'Level requirement.
  • BENIN: accepts an overall NCE Credit in the Liberal Arts, a first degree in any programme, or ND/HND Upper Credit in Mass Communication.
  • BOWEN: accepts two A' Level passes in Philosophy and any other subject.
  • BSU: accepts NCE/A' Level passes including CRS, African Religion or its equivalent.
  • CALABAR: accepts any two A' Level passes in relevant subjects.
  • IBADAN: requires two A' Level passes in one Arts subject and any other Arts/Social Sciences/Sciences subject.
  • IMSU and EKSU: No Direct Entry.
  • LAGOS: requires very good passes in three JUPEB/A' Level subjects. The accepted subjects include Literature in English, Igbo/Yoruba, CRS/IRS, French, History, Economics, Government, Chemistry, Physics and Biology, with at least one Arts subject. Related programmes with a minimum of 55% average score and NCE Credit in two teaching subjects, one of which must be an Arts subject, are also stated, subject to the UTME requirements.
  • NDU: accepts a minimum of two relevant A' Level subjects and three O'Level subjects including an O'Level pass in Mathematics; NCE Merit in Arts or Science subjects, especially Mathematics, is also accepted.
  • OAU: requires one of the two A' Level subjects to be an Arts subject.
  • SAU: accepts two A' Level subjects including Government and any other two Arts subjects or NCE in Government or History.
  • UYO: accepts passes in two A' Level subjects or ND/NCE in a cognate programme or subject at Credit/Merit level.
  • FED-WUKARI: accepts two A' Level passes obtained at GCE/IJMB/Advanced NABTEB, or Merit at NCE, or at least Credit at ND/HND in specified Arts, Social Science or Management Science areas, with additional relevant-field and O'Level conditions.
  • PHC: accepts at least two A' Level passes in GCE/HSC/JUPEB/IJMB in any Arts subject, in addition to UTME requirements. It also mentions ND/HND in Philosophy from a recognised institution in addition to UTME requirements.
  • FED-LAFIA: accepts two GCE Advanced Level lower-credit passes or equivalent, Merit passes at NCE, or a Lower Credit in Diploma and IJMB with a minimum of 9 points, in addition to the UTME requirements.
  • RSU: provides for admission into Year III with a relevant degree or HND Upper Credit, and admission into Year II with OND/ND Upper Credit or HND Lower Credit in a relevant programme, subject to the U.M.E. requirements.
  • DELSU: accepts two A/L passes or Merit passes in any Arts or Social Sciences, as well as Merit passes in DELSU Diploma in Law.

These differences show why Direct Entry candidates should check their chosen institution individually. The Philosophy table keeps the conditions attached to the relevant institution rather than presenting them as one universal rule.

Preparing for Direct Entry

Direct Entry applicants should identify their institution first and then match their qualification to that institution's condition. A qualification accepted by one university should not automatically be assumed to be accepted by another.
